Plant Care Basics

Most important rules: Use only distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water. Never regular tap water or fertilizer. Bright light is essential.

Cape Sundew (*Drosera capensis*)

Bright light, keep soil constantly moist with pure water, peat-perlite or sphagnum mix, normal room temperatures. No dormancy needed. Catches flies on sticky tentacles.

Venus Flytrap (*Dionaea muscipula*)

Full sun or strong grow light, pure water only, peat-based mix. Needs a cool winter dormancy (around 40–50 °F for 3–4 months). Do not trigger the traps for fun.

American Pitcher Plant (*Sarracenia*)

Full sun, pure water, peat mix, winter dormancy. Very tough. Tall pitchers fill with water and insects.

Tropical Pitcher (*Nepenthes*)

Bright indirect light, higher humidity, keep moist, no cold dormancy. Beautiful hanging pitchers. Great indoor plant.

Mexican Butterwort (*Pinguicula*)

Bright light, let the soil dry a little between waterings, pure water. Catches fungus gnats on sticky leaves. Very forgiving.
